This year on September 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, a journey to the Big Horn Medicine Wheel in Wyoming marked our eighth annual Pilgrimage to the most visited of Holy places ion the American Continent. We are pleased that the National Forest Service has extended a Nation status to our group as representing all Unity Churches in this practice of prayer and dedication to the well being of all life. The Medicine Wheel is 10,500 years old and is located at the singular crossing point of the three major east and west traveling roads used by the First Peoples of America. The Wheel is located at 10,000 feet of elevation, 300 miles southeast of Bozeman, Montana. Our "scouts" go up to the Medicine Wheel area on Thursday to secure camping spots. Leila and Philip will go up either Thursday or early Friday morning to set up the kitchen. Those attending can come up at any time. A general group leaving time is 1:00 PM Friday from the church parking lot. It is a six hour trip to the campsite (Porcupine Campground, one half mile east of the Medicine Wheel Turn-in on Highway 14A , then two miles down a gravel road to the camp... all marked). Saturday we walk together 1/2 mile to the Medicine Wheel from a parking area. The Forest Service will talk to us, and we will have an opportunity to walk around the wheel and come to a sense of where we are called to pray (each direction on the wheel holds a special meaning). Saturday and Sunday at sunset we will return to pray at the Wheel, and one evening after dark we will go in small groups (optional) into a cave for a period of regeneration and renewal. If there are those with physical needs we can transport them in autos for all the visits to the top. Sunday we have a prayer service in camp and each chooses when to leave for home or make an individual trip to the wheel. If you have questions about the pilgrimage please call Philip and Leila at 406-587-5259. They will serve as the information connection for identification of numbers of adults and children attending, and any needs for camping supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves and coolers. Please call them as soon as possible so that we can estimate and coordinate. There will be someone at the Church gathering area to coordinate maps and car-pooling needs on the departure Friday. It gets cold at 10,000 feet so people bring warm clothes, hats, gloves, hiking boots or sneakers, raingear and good sleeping bags. The campground has toilets (no showers). There is pumped water for washing. We need drinking water and food to share for six meals. There are spots for travel trailers, RV's and tents. If you have a need to tents or sleeping bags let Kim and Kelly know. Please call Philip and Leila for a check-in on what you have and what you might need. We also need firewood for two evenings at two fire pits... Please let us know if you can bring wood. This is a family affair so children are welcomed. think of their needs and enjoyment when packing play and comfort items. A day trip to a near-by waterfall on Saturday may provide an opportunity to swim, so bring suits. Dogs are welcome yet need to be managed by their owners, so bring a leash.
