Insights from the Minister…

Spiritual Wealth
by Rev  Rose  Houston

In the past, I spent a lot of time reading this wonderful book called “Wisdom from World Religions” by John Templeton. I came across a phrase called Spiritual Wealth several times. It intrigued me, and I thought if anyone knew about spiritual wealth, it should be this man who is so well known for his generosity.  So I gave a lot of thought to spiritual wealth. It seems we build spiritual wealth by doing spiritual work. That makes sense, of course. We study, we pray, we meditate, we give, we forgive, we do service and in doing these things we build our spiritual wealth. I like the idea that I am building on my spiritual “bank account.”
Then I began to wonder how we know the status of our spiritual wealth. When we want to know what we have in our material bank account, we go on line or we get a statement that gives us an accounting of our finances. So what kind of statement do I have for my spiritual bank account?
As I often do, I went to the “Revealing Word” for an answer.  Charles Fillmore says, “True wealth or spiritual wealth is a state of consciousness, the consciousness   of  God   as   our supply. Spiritual wealth expresses   itself   as   Faith,   Love, Substance, Joy and so on. Material wealth expresses as worldly riches, possessions of an earthly nature.”
Notice that Mr. Fillmore writes that spiritual wealth expresses “itself.”   Therefore, I made the jump in consciousness to understanding that our Spiritual Wealth Bank Account sends us a statement, also.  The statement shows the dividends we have earned as gifts of Faith, Love, Wisdom, Substance, Joy and so on. When these things just naturally show up in our lives, we know our spiritual bank account is on the plus side. If we feel we need more spiritual wealth, we just do spiritual work and build up our account. In this way, we experience balanced lives.
We speak the truth when we affirm in this offertory blessing:

  “Divine Love through me,
    blesses  and multiplies,
all that I am, all that I give
    and all that I receive.
I give in Love and I trust in God.
                                            Amen.”

We have an opportunity to build our spiritual wealth when we give of our tithes and offerings to any spiritual work. When they go in the offering bag or plate, they are transformed and deposited into our spiritual bank account. We can never lose anything we give to God. It does not matter if it is our time, our money or our talents.  It all counts.

Abundant Blessings,
Rev Rose

Drumming Circle with
Rev. Corky and Barb

12:30 p.m. –  2:00 p.m.

Corky and Barb  provide an excellent wellness support group activity through drumming. This fascinating activity engenders a sense of personal and group worth through self expression, sharing, and contributing to the whole. Drum Circles are a living metaphor of our capacity to join forces to work together effectively!
This is a meditative type of drum circle. Corky and Barb drum for you while you journey (like a meditation) to the sound of the drum. This is a unique way to connect to Spirit and to receive healing and messages.

Lunch will be provided.

MOMENT OF INSPIRATION

by Michael Jamison

Pursuing the good desire of your heart is courting behavior. Courting is not reserved for romance alone.  When you have your heart set on buying a new car, you court the car, even to the extent of going to the courthouse to get a license. When you learn of a better job opportunity than the position you already hold, you court it, presenting yourself at your best when on that first date called an interview. When searching for a different house in which to live, realtors are your dating service.
Extend this awareness about courting to the acquiring of anything.  Love is a lasso. It is as if what you love you rope and draw to you. This is obvious regarding the quality you enjoy in your lifestyle, but it is also true about the junk in your life. You lassoed it, too.
This means that if there is clutter in your life, then you must love clutter, or you would not have collected so much of it. If there is emotional baggage, then you must love tears, or you would not associate with things that make you cry. If you love telling your tragic tale to anyone who will listen, then apparently you are courting disaster. Open your eyes to what you are lassoing, and love no longer is blind.

Unity East Church

170 East Columbus Street
 Pickerington, OH 43147
 (614) 920-4442

The story is about a young gymnast Dan Millman played by Scott Mechlowicz, and his struggle to make sense of his life in which he is successful, but still unfulfilled. By chance he meets his "Yoda"/Shaolin priest/Boss, Paul, who helps him "get his head straight" after which he goes on to be comfortable with his athletic prowess, albeit not exactly Olympic caliber. There is a lot of jumping around scene wise during which we don't know what is dream (part of getting his head straight) or reality showing his maturing personality. He suffers a debilitating physical injury which forces him to work very hard to get back where he was ability wise earlier, but much wiser for successfully negotiating his trans-formation to wise old Grasshopper. This is almost a "Rocky IX" type movie with a wonderful happy ending.

Bring your favorite comfort food for all to share or just bring yourself.

Unity East Church at the Violet Festival!
July 28 – July 31

For the very first time, Unity East is joining the community in celebrating the Violet Festival.  The Pickerington Violet Festival is an annual event that celebrates the history of Pickerington and Violet Township, Ohio. The Violet Festival began as a small community celebration in 1998. The event became quite popular and more than fifty thousand people attend each year.  The event includes music acts, a parade, a Miss Violet competition, a five kilometer race, a crafts show, and carnival rides. It’s a great way to showcase our church and let people know our church is in the community.

We will need many volunteers to help out at our table which is located in the Business Tent. This is an important event to promote our church, so please take a moment to sign-up for the hours you are available to be serving at our table. Rev Rose will conduct a short orientation session on what to tell people when they stop to ask questions.  It promises to be a fun filled and happy time.

At first, the scientist flat out refuses, but Pete’s mother pleads with him to reconsider.  The three of them fly to Costa Rica, but the season of the blue Morpho is drawing to a close and Alan and Pete only have a few days to capture a specimen.

ADULT EDUCATION CLASS

  YOUTH MINISTRYSundays 10:30 a.m.

We have opportunities for volunteers in Youth Ministry.  Please contact Jessica Starr, Youth Director – e-mail: mindfulove@aol.com to learn more about how you could help once a month.

A thriving Unity community MUST include a thriving youth community.  Children and young adults literally are the future of Unity East and will bring UE’s spiritual purpose into tomorrow.   This was the clear message at the 8th Annual National New Thought Children & Teen Ministry Conference (attended in May by Reverend Rose and I) – a dynamic, well-rounded spiritual community will naturally attract, support, engage and educate children and families.  We intend to do just that!

During the conference, Reverend Rose and I had the opportunity to explore the ways in which we currently welcome children and families.  Our current youth ministry is supported by a team of gifted teachers who contribute their time and talents on many levels.  Resources, such as the new 12 Powers curriculum and classroom supplies, are provided to the teachers and children when needed.  Parents are able to access childcare for classes and workshops outside of service time which enables them to participate more fully.  Reverend Rose, along with the board and congregation, remains open and welcoming to the ideas of the children and youth ministry teachers. In so many ways, we have opened our community to the blessings our children and families contribute!

In conjunction with celebrating all of the ways that we as a community welcome our young congregants, we also began (and are continuing) the exploration of ways to expand and extend our welcoming reach to current and future families.  In the near future, Unity East will begin introducing family classes and activities outside of service time to provide support, education and inspiration specific to the spiritual needs of these invaluable members of our community.  In addition to new activities, our current youth program is being infused with energy, creativity and divine inspiration!  As a way to raise awareness of the Unity message while serving the larger community, UE will be offering outreach classes and programs as well.  Also, watch for more information coming soon about our Welcome (Back) Teens Night and the new teen activity calendar!  Not only will UE be expanding the ways in which we serve our children, our children are expanding the ways in which they serve UE.  The youth have begun to plan ways in which they can engage more fully with the congregation, including monthly service as greeters.

Unity principles remind us to honor the inherent wholeness and wisdom within each one of us, from the smallest child to the eldest member of our community.  Each of us, including our children, bring unique  gifts to their community and the world as whole.  We anticipate that through the expansion of our youth program we will contribute to the rich wisdom already present at UE.

If you have ideas or energy to contribute to our growth process, please contact Jessica Starr at mindfulove@aol.com.

Board Notes....

It is an exciting time for the Board of Trustees as we explore new ways to promote our church and enhance our ability to serve.  To this end, in lieu of its regular meeting, the Board of Trustees engaged in an all day Board Training Retreat held at the church and facilitated by Rev Rose.

The training event included visioning, identifying where we are at present, and where we would like to be in the future.   Actionable items follow.

Ø      We discussed ways to attract new members and welcome back those we haven’t seen for awhile.

Ø      Rev Rose shared information from the Youth Ministry Conference that she and our new Youth Ministry Director, Jessica Starr, attended in May.  We recognize that a strong youth program is necessary and that we need to find ways to bring the youth into the congregation.  One  suggestion  was to have a Bagel Sunday to welcome teens  back to Unity.  We plan to implement this activity immediately with the help of Robin Cummings.

Ø      The board reviewed policies and procedures and member duties assigned by the Bylaws.

Ø      Rev Diana Repko gave a presentation on church finances.

Ø      We planned additional ways to make our presence known in the community.

        ·         Our first step to making our presence in the community known occurred on May 22nd.  Rev. Rose and I as
Board President attended the Pickerington Chamber of  Commerce Lunch.

·         Unity East will have a display booth at the Violet Festival.

·         Several additional ideas are being considered for outreach to the community.

The time spent at the Board Retreat was enjoyable and gave us time to focus on planning in a wider scope than the traditional Board meeting. Therefore, because the Leadership retreat was very beneficial,  it was agreed by the Board of Trustees to have a Leadership meeting every quarter apart from the regular Board meeting.

As your leadership team, we are continuing to gather additional estimates for repaving the church parking lot.  Soon, the Carillon will be serviced and repaired so that we can once again, have the lovely music sounding out as a way to praise God.

 Blessings,

John Crawford
Board President
